Most Busch Clash Appearances

While some people count down the days until the Daytona 500, I’ve always looked forward to the first day of practice for the Busch Clash. This year, it’s February 8th (at 11:30 EST, if you’re wondering).

The Busch Clash is an invitation-only race, with the participants having to satisfy one or more of the following:

  • 2019 Busch Pole Award winners
  • Drivers who qualified for the 2019 playoffs
  • Drivers who were full-time competitors in 2019 and
    • Previously won the Clash race
    • Previously won a Daytona 500 pole
    • Previously won the Daytona 500 race

There were 20 drivers eligible, but two (Daniels Suárez and Hemric) are not participating.

According to jayski.com’s statistical advance, there have been 14 different formats for the Busch Clash since it started 1979. So who has the most Busch Clash appearances?

A bar chart showing the drivers with the most appearances in the Busch Clash.

That honor goes to Mark Martin, with 24 total appearances, followed closely by Bill Elliott and Jeff Gordon with 23 and 22 respectively.

Among active drivers — which I shaded green — the leader is Jimmie Johnson with 17 Busch Clash appearances.

According to jayski.com, only five drivers won the first Busch Clash they competed in. And only one of those five drivers is still active today. I’ll encourage you to zip over there and find out who those drivers are.
