The NASCAR championship format doesn’t necessarily reward the driver who wins the most races in a season. It’s far more important WHEN a driver wins, as Joey Logano showed this year.
Kyle Larson had the most wins in 2024, with six. Champion Joey Logano came in second with four wins. So while it’s true that Logano won the championship without having the most wins, he did have the second-most wins. second.
Five drivers each had three wins this year, and 11 drivers each had a single win.
Win Rate
Larson’s dominance is even more impressive if we consider win rates โ the percentage of wins relative to the number of races run. Larson achieved his six wins in just 35 races, having missed the Coca-Cola 600.
Historical Perspective
In the stage-racing era (2017 to present), the highest win rate among full-time drivers is Kyle Larson’s 2021 year, in which his win rate was 27.8%. Other top win-rates include:
- Kevin Harvick had a 25.0% rate in 2020
- Martin Truex Jr. had a 22.2% win rate in 2017
- Harvick had a 22.2% win rate in 2018
- Kyle Busch had a 22.2% win rate in 2018
- Denny Hamlin almost broke the 20% mark in 2020 with a win rate of 19.4%
2024 Winners by Manufacturer
As has been the case for the last four years, Chevrolet won the most races.
As has been the case for the last three years, Ford won the driver’s championship.
In 2024, Chevrolet won 15, or 41.7% of all 36 races. Ford won 12 races โ the first time they’ve been in double digits since 2020 when they won half the races and still didn’t win the championship. Ford’s 12 wins constitute 33.3% of the season’s races. Toyota won the remaining nine races, or 25.0%
If we look at percentages relative to all the cars entered in the races, Chevrolet won 2.8% of the races it entered. Ford won 2.3% and Toyota won 3.0%. Those are the win rates over all cars, so it reflects return on investment for the manufacturers. The Toyota figure is lower this year because of Legacy Motor Club’s conversion from Chevrolet to Toyota and their lack of wins.
2024 Wins by Team
Hendrick Motorsports had the most wins of any team in 2024 with 11 wins over four cars, or an average of 2.75 wins per car. As noted above, six of those wins were by Kyle Larson.
Team Penske came in second with a total of eight wins throughout the year. But they accomplished those eight wins with only three cars, for an average of 2.67 wins per car.
Joe Gibbs Racing had the third most wins with six over four car, while 23XI had three wins with two cars. In both cases, one car on each team failed to win a race this year.
Trackhouse and RFK Racing each had two wins, while Stewart-Haas Racing, Richard Childress Racing, JTG-Daugherty and Wood Brothers each had a single win. The RCR win, by Austin Dillon, carries an asterisk: That was the second Richmond race where Dillon’s win was ruled ineligible to move him into the playoffs.
2024 Unique Winners
The 2024 season featured a total of 18 different winners. That’s up three from 2023, which had only 15 unique winners. It’s one fewer than the 19 winners had in 2022, the first year of the Gen-7 car.
2024: The Year of Close Finishes
The 2024 season featured:
- 3 finishes with a margin of victory of less than 0.01 seconds
- Buescher lost to Larson by 0.001 seconds at the first Kansas race.
- Suรกrez beat Blaney by 0.003 seconds at the first Atlanta race and Kyle Busch by 0.007 seconds.
- Ricky Stenhouse Jr. beat Brad Kezelowski by 0.006 seconds at Talladega II.
- 4 finishes with a margin of victory of less than 0.05 seconds (The above, plus Daytona II.)
- 14 finishes with a margin of victory of less than 0.1 seconds.
- 11 finishes with a margin of victory more than 1 second.
- 6 finishes with a MOV more than 2 seconds.
- 2 finishes with a MOV more than 5 seconds (Phoenix I and Bristol II.)
- 6 finishes under caution (Daytona 500, Texas, Charlotte Oval, Indy, Richmond II and Atlanta II.)
The total margin of victory for all 30 races that didn’t end under caution was 38.721 seconds.
