The 2024 top finishes by teams report identifies the strongest teams by wins, but also by how well the team finished when they didn’t win. Some teams that didn’t manage wins still had some pretty strong finishes.
2024 Top Finishes by Team: The Wins
Let’s look first at wins, which I’ve listed in the table below. The ‘Races Run’ column is all the races run by all the cars at the team.
The percentage isn’t the percentage of all 36 wins, but rather the percentage of wins relative to the number of chances the team had to win – i.e., all the cars they ran during the season.
Team | Wins | Races Run | Win Rate |
---|---|---|---|
Hendrick Motorsports | 11 | 144 | 7.64 |
Team Penske | 8 | 108 | 7.41 |
Joe Gibbs Racing | 6 | 144 | 4.17 |
23XI Racing | 3 | 75 | 4.00 |
Wood Brothers Racing | 1 | 36 | 2.78 |
Trackhouse Racing | 2 | 72 | 2.78 |
JTG Daugherty Racing | 1 | 36 | 2.78 |
Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing | 2 | 75 | 2.67 |
Richard Childress | 1 | 78 | 1.28 |
Stewart Haas Racing | 1 | 144 | 0.69 |
Hendrick had the best team win percentage at 7.64%. Team Penske had fewer total wins, but also ran three cars compared to Hendrick’s four. Penske thus has a 7.41% win rate. All seven of the drivers between these two teams had won in previous seasons.
Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI form the B-tier for 2024 with 4.17 and 4.0% wins respectively. Gibbs is weaker than usual given that Ty Gibbs is in only his second full-time season. He’s at the 87-races-run mark, so he’s getting close to the point where newer drivers start winning if they’re going to win.
2024 Top Finishes by Teams: Top-Two Finishes
Given the closeness of finishes this year, wins aren’t everything when it comes to evaluating a race team’s performance. Win stats could very easily have come out quite differently for the sake of a few hundredths of a second.
So let’s examine each team’s top-two finishes.
Team | Races Run | Top 2 Finishes | Top 2 Rate |
---|---|---|---|
Hendrick Motorsports | 144 | 19 | 13.19 |
Team Penske | 108 | 12 | 11.11 |
Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing | 75 | 8 | 10.67 |
Joe Gibbs Racing | 144 | 14 | 9.72 |
23XI Racing | 75 | 6 | 8.00 |
Trackhouse Racing | 72 | 3 | 4.17 |
Richard Childress | 78 | 3 | 3.85 |
Wood Brothers Racing | 36 | 1 | 2.78 |
JTG Daugherty Racing | 36 | 1 | 2.78 |
Stewart Haas Racing | 144 | 2 | 1.39 |
Front Row Motorsports | 73 | 1 | 1.37 |
Kaulig Racing | 77 | 1 | 1.30 |
Spire Motorsports | 108 | 1 | 0.93 |
RFK Racing leaps up in the standings when we consider wins and second-place finishes. While RFK had only a 2.67% win rate, they’ve got a 10.7% top-two-finish rate. That’s better than any team except Hendrick, Penske and JGR, each of which have more cars than RFK’s two.
2024 Top Finishes by Teams: Top-Three Finishes
Now we’ll extend the view out once position forward to the top-three finishes.
Team | Races Run | Top 3 Finishes | Top 3 Rate |
---|---|---|---|
Hendrick Motorsports | 144 | 30 | 20.83 |
Joe Gibbs Racing | 144 | 24 | 16.67 |
Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing | 75 | 11 | 14.67 |
Team Penske | 108 | 15 | 13.89 |
23XI Racing | 75 | 9 | 12.00 |
Trackhouse Racing | 72 | 4 | 5.56 |
Richard Childress | 78 | 4 | 5.13 |
Stewart Haas Racing | 144 | 5 | 3.47 |
Wood Brothers Racing | 36 | 1 | 2.78 |
JTG Daugherty Racing | 36 | 1 | 2.78 |
Spire Motorsports | 108 | 2 | 1.85 |
Front Row Motorsports | 73 | 1 | 1.37 |
Kaulig Racing | 77 | 1 | 1.30 |
In top-three finishes, Hendrick still leads, but now JGR comes in second and RFK third. RFK is doing all this with a two-car team, as well.
There season had a total of 108 opportunities for top-three finishes. The four Hendrick Motorsports cars took 27.8% of all top-three finishes. JGR took 22.2% of all top-three finishes. The top two teams, together, accounted for half of all top-three finishes.
2024 Top-Five Finishes
The top-five finish list has Hendrick Motorsports (32.65%) and Joe Gibbs Racing (27.8%) finishing one-two again. When it comes to top-five finishes, however, 23XI comes in third with 18 top-five finishes (24.0%) between their two cars (and a handful of races where they ran a third car.) RFK and Penske tie for fourth place in top-five finishes: Each has a 21.3% top-five finish rate.
If we look at the bottom of the top-five finish charts:
- This is Legacy Motor Club’s first appearance on any chart in this report. They had only one top-five finish in 81 chances (Erik Jones’ finish at the second Talladega race), for a 1.23% top-five rate. On the positive side, the team doubled the number of top-five finishes they’ve had in their three-year history.
- Kaulig Racing also had a single top-five finish thanks to part-time driver Shane van Gisbergen’s Watkins Glen finish. Because they had only 77 opportunities, Kaulig finishes 2024 with a 1.30% top-five-finish rate.
- Rick Ware Racing came in third from the bottom with one top-five finish in 72 tries, for a 1.39% top-five-finish rate. That finish was Cody Ware at the second Daytona race.
Summary Across Finishes
Let’s summarize all of these finishes in one table. I view win rate as more important than the number of wins when evaluating teams because different teams run different numbers of cars.
Even if Hendrick and Penske were equal in terms of ability, Hendrick would have more wins because they have four cars and Penske only runs three.
]Team | Win Rate | Top 2 | Top 3 | Top 5 | Top 10 | Top 20 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Hendrick Motorsports | 7.64 | 13.19 | 20.83 | 32.64 | 52.08 | 78.47 |
Team Penske | 7.41 | 11.11 | 13.89 | 21.30 | 35.19 | 60.19 |
Joe Gibbs Racing | 4.17 | 9.72 | 16.67 | 27.78 | 44.44 | 65.97 |
23XI Racing | 4.00 | 8.00 | 12.00 | 24.00 | 46.67 | 72.00 |
Trackhouse Racing | 2.78 | 4.17 | 5.56 | 13.89 | 31.94 | 65.28 |
Wood Brothers Racing | 2.78 | 2.78 | 2.78 | 2.78 | 5.56 | 25.00 |
JTG Daugherty Racing | 2.78 | 2.78 | 2.78 | 8.33 | 16.67 | 38.89 |
Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing | 2.67 | 10.67 | 14.67 | 21.33 | 40.00 | 72.00 |
Richard Childress | 1.28 | 3.85 | 5.13 | 7.69 | 19.23 | 43.59 |
Stewart Haas Racing | 0.69 | 1.39 | 3.47 | 4.86 | 17.36 | 50.69 |
Hendrick Motorsports ranks first in every category, with their drivers earning top-10 finishes well over half the time.
Penske is second in wins and top-five finishes, but third in top-three finishes, fourth in top-five finishes, fifth in top-10 finishes and sixth in top-20 finishes.
23XI is keeping up with Joe Gibbs Racing in terms of percentages. 23XI will expand to three cars in 2025, so the rates will likely go down as newcomer Riley Herbst finds his footing. JGR will also see changes as Chase Briscoe takes the place of retiring Martin Truex Jr.
